Upon first reading, Blumrich's work sounds incredibly importanthe designed a workable shuttlecraft!

But upon further examination, how useful is his design? Blumrich's design would only work in atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, gravity and radiation conditions very similar to those on Earth.

Click here to see the Basic Data on the Planets of Earth's Solar System

  1. Mercury has no atmosphere, is incredibly hot on the side that faces the Sun and has extremely high radiation levels because it is so close to the Sun. Blumrich's craft wouldn't work there.

  2. Venus has incredible atmospheric pressure, a highly corrosive atmosphere, and ambient temperature that can melt most metals. The craft wouldn't work there.

  3. We are already on Earth. (In case you didn't notice . . .) The craft is useless to us.

  4. Earth's moon has virtually no atmosphere. Helicopter-based technology would not work there.

  5. The atmosphere on Mars is much thinner and its gravity lighter. The helicopters probably could not provide enough lift for flight.

  6. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune have much stronger gravity, much denser atmospheres, tremendous storm winds and give off high levels of radiation. The craft could not survive such conditions.

  7. The various moons of Jupiter, Saturn, etc., are subject to tremendous gravitational stress and radiation from their respective planets. They are incredibly cold, generally below -300°F (-185°C). The craft could not survive such conditions or sustain life as we know it without massive amounts of additional life-support equipment.

  8. The nearest solar system to our own is Alpha Centauri A and B and Alpha Centauri C, also called Proxima Centauri, which are 4.3 light-years away (26 trillion miles/42 trillion km). It is a trinary star system. As indicated above, that means gravity and radiation conditions would be substantially different from our solar system.  Distances to the nearest stars to earth.

What's the point? It will be centuries before we can find and travel to another planet where we could actually use something like Blumrich's design. By that time we will have shuttlecraft technology far superior to Blumrich's design.

There is another point to consider—just as it would take far superior "mothership" technology to travel from Earth to another solar system, it would also take far superior technology for "aliens" to travel to Earth. Anyone with such advanced technology definitely would not be using helicopter-based shuttlecraft that are at about our current level of technology!
